13 EASY STEPS TO HELP REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING
#1 Minimize your need for A/C
If you’re going to use air conditioning, make sure that it is well maintained and that you keep the temperature set to 26 degrees, if possible (each half-degree below 26 increases your operating costs by 8%). Also, make sure you have a programmable thermostat, so that you’re not cooling the house when you’re not there.

#2 Don’t idle
If every driver of a light duty vehicle avoided idling by five minutes a day, collectively over the year, we would save 680 million litres of fuel, over 1.6 million tons of GHG emissions, and $646 million annually in fuel costs (assuming fuel costs are $0.95/L).

#3 Cool it with the lighting
Switch to compact florescent lightbulbs (CFLs) that are much more efficient in turning electricity into actual light instead of heat (where most of the energy consumed by a normal incandescent lightbulb ends up). You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the steady money savings CFSs can generate while providing the same light as a traditional bulb — and less heat.

#4 Be an energy star
Replace old appliances with high-efficiency, EnergyStar models. Whether it’s a fridge, furnace or air-conditioner, all appliances have two real price tags — the initial cost and the cost of running it. EnergyStar models will save money, and the environment, in the long term as they use significantly less energy.

#5 Be naturally cool
Plant a tree to provide shade on south and west facing exposures. Trees are massively efficient air conditioners because they provide shade and transpire large quantities of water from the ground into the air, which helps to cool outside temperatures. While you’re waiting for your tree to grow, close your blinds during the day to keep the heat out, then open them when the temperature drops at night.

#6 Choose green power
You have a choice about the power you buy for your home or business — it doesn’t have to be dirty coal power. Why not tap into the power of the wind or water from one of Canada’s growing number of green power suppliers? Sign up today for clean, green power

#7 Go ‘au naturel’
Switch your water heater from electricity to natural gas and save. Gas water heating uses close to half the energy of heating with electricity — resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions created through power generation. Go solar for even more savings. In summer, a solar hot water system can meet almost all of your hot water needs while in winter it can significantly pre-heat the water that is then further heated by your existing gas or electric water heater.

#8 Drive smart
Keeping your vehicle in top operating condition will save you fuel and money, reduce your long-term maintenance costs and minimize harmful exhaust emissions. Planning your trips will also help you save fuel and minimize emissions — use public transportation or carpool when possible and, when driving, make sure to combine errands into one journey.

#9 Give it a whirl
Ceiling fans are a great way to feel cool. Just make sure to get an EnergyStar rated unit (as much as 50% more efficient) and then enjoy the breeze (they’re also helpful in winter for keeping warm air from collecting at the ceiling where it is the least useful –– just reverse the fan direction).

#10 Give your clothes the cold treatment
Set your washing machine to cold water for washing and rinsing — with modern detergents it will get your clothes just as clean, while saving you dollars. Front-load washing machines (particularly EnergyStar rated washers) are more efficient than top-load models primarily because they use less water (which saves on your water heating costs and water supply costs).

#11 Geo-power your house
Geo-thermal (also known as geo-exchange) systems are a great way to heat or cool your home using the energy of the sun stored in the ground. In the winter, heat is extracted from the earth and in the summer the process is reversed — heat is extracted from the house and deposited in the ground with equal efficiency, using the same equipment. This simple technology can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with a conventional heating and cooling system by two-thirds.

#12 Make some of your own juice
Why not use your roof to generate some of your own power? Ontario has taken some big steps to make self-generation an attractive option. Net metering, which lets you send excess power to the grid and draw power from it when you need it, eliminates the need for a huge bank of batteries. As an added bonus, you can get a rebate on the provincial sales tax on new or expanded solar energy, wind energy, micro-hydroelectric and geothermal heating/cooling systems for residential applications.

…and finally…

#13 Spread the word, sign the Pledge and cool off!
Why not tell your friends about your concerns over global warming. Spread the word so that more people sign the Pledge to help lick global warming as individuals and to lobby government. If we all become involved with each of us making small adjustments in how we live, we can have a huge effect collectively to help stop global warming.

MAKERS OF WINDEX, PLEDGE, DRANO, SHOUT
ANOTHER BIG COMPANY THAT IS DOING THEIR PART.
THEIR LARGE PLANT CALLED WAXDALE, IN RACINE, WISCONSIN HAS BEEN A LEADER IN
ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN FOR INDUSTRIES SINCE 2005.
THEY ARE COMING UP WITH MORE WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY AND PRODUCE MUCH OF THEIR OWN POWER.
WIND MILL FARMS AND METHANE COLLECTION FROM A GARBAGE DUMP TO RUN A WHOLE FACTORY THROUGH COGENRATION.
PERHAPS MORE LARGE COMPANIES WILL SEE THE SAVINGS AND THE GREENER LOOK AND START DESIGNING FOR THE FUTURE.

THEY ARE HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, BUT I WONDER WHAT THE LONG TERM AFFECTS WILL BE FROM THE VERY PRODUCTS THEY ARE PRODUCING IN THEIR "GREEN FACTORY".
AT MY WORK I HAVE REPLACED WINDEX WITH A "MICROFIBRE" CLOTH. A FEW DROPS OF WATER AND IT CLEANS GLASS BETTER AND EASIER THAN ANYTHING I HAVE USED. WHEN IT GETS DIRTY, THROW IT IN THE WASHING MACHINE. IT'LL LAST FOREVER.
INSTEAD OF A POLISH LIKE PLEDGE (WHICH WEARS AWAY AND ATTRACTS DUST) I FINISH WOOD IN A WATER BASED VARATHANE AND FEATHER DUST OR USE A MICROFIBRE CLOTH.
INSTEAD OF DRANO OR LIQUID PLUMBER, I USE "LIQUI-BAC" LIVE BACTERIA THAT WORK WONDERS ON CLOGS, DRAIN SMELLS, MOLDS AND IN GARBAGE BINS. ALSO GREAT IN KITCHENS, GREASE TRAPS ETC AND ITS SAFE AND HEALTH DEPT APPROVED.
BLACK MARKS AND THE LIKE GET REMOVED USING ONE OF THOSE "MAGIC ERASERS" FROM "MR. CLEAN". THEY WORK MUCH THE SAME AS THE MICROFIBER CLOTHS. JUST A FEW DROPS OF WATER. THEY WORK GOOD WHEN DRY BUT WEAR AWAY REAL FAST. WET THEN SQUEEZE OUT. ON A HIGH GLOSS WAX FINISH ON VINYL FLOOR, BLACK MARKS FROM SHOES ARE BEST REMOVED BY RUBBING IT OFF WITH THE SOLE OF THE SHOE. SOME GOOD OLD ROCK AND ROLL AND DO A BIT OF THE "TWIST". ON A 32 x 60 FOOT GYM FLOOR IT CAN TAKE AWHILE. BUT STILL FASTER THAN ANY OTHER METHOD I'VE TRIED.
ORANGE OR CITRUS BASED CLEANERS ARE ALSO AMONG THE BEST. FOR REMOVING WATER PAINTS FOR "FINGER PAINTING" FROM CARPET, THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT WORKS. A GREAT HAND CLEANER AS WELL ALTHOUGH IT WILL LEAVE THE SKIN DRY.
ANOTHER COMMERCIAL PRODUCT I USE IS HAND SOAP IN A DISPENSER FOR PUBLIC WASHROOMS. I HAVE ONE IN MY KITCHEN THAT DISPENSES A FOAMY FROM A LITRE SIZED BOTTLE OF LIQUID. IT CLEANS AN AMAZING ASSORTMENT ESPECIALLY HANDS. AUTOMOTIVE GREASE REAL WELL.
WHEN IT COMES TO MY ANNUAL WAX STRIPPING ON THAT 32 x 60 FT FLOOR THERE IS NOT MUCH I CAN USE FOR THE WAX REMOVAL EXCEPT A GREEN AS POSSIBLE STRIPPER. AFTER THE STRIPPING IS DONE THE SURFACE NEEDS TO BE NEUTRALISED (ph) BEFORE NEW WAX CAN BE APPLIED. THE MAIN PRODUCTS FOR THIS ARE UP TO $30 A GALLON AND WITH THE WARNINGS ON THE LABEL, THEY CAN'T BE VERY GREEN. MY ALTERNATIVE IS TO USE VINEGAR. A FEW DOLLARS A GALLON AND IT ACTUALLY WORKS BETTER THAN THE COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS. ANOTHER BENEFIT OF VINEGAR IS THAT IT ALSO HELPS NEUTRALIZE THE SMELL FROM THE STRIPPER. ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE TO CHEMICAL STRIPPING I HAVE BEEN USING IS TO DRY STRIP WITH A COURSE HEAVY STRIPPING PAD ON A BUFFING MACHINE. WHEN DRY IT WILL "SAND" THE SURFACE DOWN QUITE EASILY. THE WORST PROBLEM IS THE DUST WHICH IS VACUUMED UP. BESIDES NOT USING A STRONG CHEMICAL TO STRIP THE WAX IT ALLOWS THE NEW WAX TO GO ON FASTER AND SMOOTHER REQUIRING HALF THE NUMBER OF COATS TO GET TO THE "WET LOOK". THE COSTS ARE A LOT LOWER TOO SINCE THE STRIPPING PADS COST LESS THAN THE CHEMICAL STRIPPER, NO ADDED COST FOR NEUTRALISER CHEMICALS OR SEALER AS UNDERCOAT FOR WAX AND HALF THE WAX. PLUS IT TAKES ABOUT 1/6 THE AMOUNT OF TIME.
IT MAY NOT SEEM LIKE MUCH HELP.BUT EVERY LITTLE BIT DOES HELP IF ENOUGH OF US DO IT.

SPORT FISHING IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA
I WAS AN AVID FISHERMAN MOST OF MY LIFE. SPINNING GEAR AND FLY. I GOT HOOKED ON TROUT WHILE STILL IN SCHOOL AND NEVER FISHED FOR MUCH ELSE AFTER THAT. I STARTED ON A TINY STREAM THAT CAME OUT OF A FISH HATCHERY. THE STREAM WAS LOADED WITH VERY COLORFUL BROOK TROUT, PAN FRY SIZE. FLESH THE COLOR OF SALMON. AFTER THAT IT WAS RAINBOWS AND NORTHERN PIKE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. OTHER FISH I'VE CAUGHT INCLUDE BASS, SAUGER, STURGEON, FRESHWATER EEL, CATFISH, SALMON, MUSKY, LAKE TROUT, BROWN, CUTTHROAT, DOLLY VARDEN AND I EVEN MANAGED TO CATCH AND RELEASE A COUPLE OF GOLDEN TROUT. GOLDEN ARE RELATED TO THE BROWN TROUT AND WERE INTRODUCED TO ALBERTA FROM CALIFORNIA TO A FEW SMALL LAKES IN MORE REMOTE AREAS OF KANANASKIS JUST WEST OF CALGARY. AN INTERESTING ARTICLE ON THE GOLDEN http://www.flyanglersonline.com/feature ... can306.php QUICKLY BECOMING A VERY RARE BREED. I'M GLAD I GOT A COUPLE FOR MY OWN MEMORIES. I JUST WISH I HAD HAD A CAMERA WITH ME. AFTER 4 HOURS TOTAL HIKING THERE AND BACK, IT DIDN'T REALLY SEEM WORTH IT AT THE TIME BUT NOW ITS NOTHING BUT FOND MEMORIES WITH NO REGRETS. I HAD THOUGHT OF BRINGING ONE BACK TO TAKE TO A TAXIDERMIST TO PRESERVE IT FOREVER, BUT I DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT ABOUT TAKING SOMETHING IN SO FEW NUMBERS. I FEEL THIS TROUT NEEDS TO BE REGULATED DOWN TO CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY AND THE NUMBERS OF FISHERMAN BETTER CONTROLLED LIKE HELI-FISHING. THE ALBERTA STOCKS ARE SURVIVING BETTER THAN THEIR ANCESTORS IN CALIFORNIA AND ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD AND SHOULD BE PRESERVED AS BREEDING STOCK ONLY FOR INTRODUCTION INTO MORE ALPINE STYLE LAKES. IT WOULD BE A SHAME TO SEE THE "CROWN JEWELS" OF TROUT DISAPPEAR.
MY BEST FISHING HAD TO BE THE BOW RIVER RUNNING THROUGH CALGARY. BROWN AND RAINBOWS. ANYTIME OF YEAR. THE FISHING WAS AMAZING UP TO THE 80'S BUT IT BECAME TOO FAMOUS WORLDWIDE AND THAT QUICKLY AFFECTED THE NUMBERS. SINCE THE 80'S THE LIMIT WAS 2 PER DAY THEN THE MERCURY BECAME A PROBLEM WITH RECOMMENDATIONS TO ONLY EAT ONE PER YEAR. AT THAT POINT I HUNG UP MY GEAR. I MANAGED TO FISH ABOUT 150 MILES ALTOGETHER OF THE BOW RIVER WHEN IT WAS IN ITS PRIME AND IT WAS THE BEST I HAD EVER HAD IN OVER 30 YEARS OF FISHING. BUT I ALSO SADLY WATCHED IT GO DOWNHILL DUE TO HUMAN INFLUENCES. THE REASONS INCLUDED OVER-FISHING, POLLUTION, AND MISMANAGEMENT OF WATER LEVELS CONTROLLED BY DAMS. THERE ARE A FEW DAMS AND SEWAGE PLANTS ALONG IT THAT MESS IT UP. THE SEWAGE WATER THAT COMES OUT OF THESE PLANTS IS "WITHIN GOVERNMENT TOLERANCES" BUT YOU WOULD NOT DRINK IT OR EVEN WANT TO TOUCH IT JUST BECAUSE OF THE SMELL ALONE. THE WATER THEY TOOK OUT OF THE RIVER AND "PURIFIED" DIDN'T SMELL LIKE THAT THEN, SO WHY DOES IT SMELL WHEN ITS COMING OUT OF A TREATMENT PLANT ? IF ITS GOING BACK INTO THE RIVER SYSTEM IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST AS CLEAN AS IT WAS TO START. MAYBE IT NEEDS TO BE RUN THROUGH A FEW MORE "PROCESSES" BEFORE RELEASING IT TO THE WILD. THE ALGAE GROWTH DOWNSTREAM OF THE ODGEN ROAD PLANT IS REALLY THICK. THE REST OF THE RIVER DOESN'T HAVE NEAR AS MUCH ALGAE. WEED GROWTH IS UP IN MOST OF THE RIVER NOW AND THAT RAISES THE PIKE NUMBERS IN THE SLOWER CURRENT AREAS WHICH DECREASES THE NUMBER OF TROUT FRY THAT MAKE IT THROUGH THE FIRST YEAR. THE ELBOW RIVER WHICH DUMPS INTO THE BOW AT DOWNTOWN CALGARY IS IN MUCH BETTER SHAPE THAN THE BOW BEFORE IT HITS THE CITY. I HEAR THAT THE BOW RIVER IS ON THE RECOVERY THIS LAST FEW YEARS. PERHAPS BY THE TIME I RETIRE IN 10 YEARS, IT WILL BE FISHABLE AGAIN AT LEAST FOR CATCH AND RELEASE.
UPDATE: THE BOW RIVER BROWN TROUT POPULATION HAS BEEN WIPED OUT IN THE LAST FEW YEARS BECAUSE OF ROCK SLIME COVERING ALL THE AREAS WHERE THE BROWN TROUT NEEDED TO LAY EGGS. IN A FEW FISHING TRIPS I HAVEN'T CAUGHT ANY BROWNS, THE RAINBOWS SEEM TO BE DOING OK OTHER THAN THE SMALLER SIZES AND FEWER NUMBERS. IT REALLY HURTS TO SEE SUCH A FANTASTIC FISHING RIVER BEING CHANGED SO DRAMATICALLY. (2015)
I AM IN FULL AGREEMENT WITH HIGHER FISHING LICENSE FEES, MORE GAME WARDENS, MUCH STIFFER PENALTIES FOR OFFENSES, MORE STOCKING OF SMALL LAKES FOR APPROVED FISHING HOLES (PRIVATE AND GOVERNMENT), MORE COMMERCIAL AND PRIVATE FISH HATCHERIES TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT TAKEN FROM THE WILD, LOTS MORE 4x4 PARKS PRIVATE AND GOVERNMENT AND EVEN A COMBINATION OF 4x4 PARK AND A STOCKED PRIVATE POND. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE PROMOTING HATCHERIES , BOTH PRIVATE AND COMMERCIAL AND BOTH PUBLIC FISHING AND FARMING. THERE ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH LIVESTOCK PONDS ON PRIVATE LAND TO SUPPLY MOST OF THE FISH PRODUCTS IN THIS PROVINCE. SALMON, TROUT, CHAR AND MANY OTHER SPECIES ARE NOW BEING FARMED WITH GREAT SUCCESS. THEN PUT A CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY ON ALL WILD FISH FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS TO LET THEM CATCH UP.
THE DAMAGE 4x4 AND DIRT BIKES DO TO THE ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE KEPT TO PRIVATE LAND AND NOT THE WILDERNESS. THERE ARE MANY FARMS AND RANCHES STRUGGLING OR GOING UNDER THAT COULD SURVIVE QUITE WELL IF THEIR LAND WAS USED FOR SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT INSTEAD. THERE IS A SECTION OF GOVERNMENT PARKLAND WEST OF CALGARY CALLED McLEAN CREEK OHV RESERVED FOR OFF-ROAD VEHICLES. ITS A GOOD IDEA BUT THERE IS NO WILDLIFE IN IT OR NEAR IT. THERE USED TO BE LOTS OF WILDLIFE IN THAT AREA.
DON'T GET ME WRONG. I USED TO DIRT BIKE ON MOUNTAIN TRAILS IN BC AND I ALSO ENJOYED A FULL SIZED 4x4 PICKUP WITH 425 HP ON EXTRA WIDE 33 INCH TIRES. BUT TEARING UP THE TERRAIN WAS NEVER AN OPTION FOR ME SINCE I DID MOST OF MY ROUGH STUFF BY MYSELF AND FAR, FAR FROM HOME. I COULDN'T AFFORD TO HAVE MY MACHINE BREAKDOWN 70 OR 100 KM DOWN A TRAIL FROM NOWHERE WITH NO TRAFFIC. IF I FIGURED I'D NEED TO STOMP ON IT TO GET OVER SOMETHING, I'D LOOK FOR ANOTHER WAY. AND OUT OF A COUPLE OF DIRT BIKES AND A 4x4 I WAS NEVER LEFT STRANDED WITH BREAKAGE FROM CRANKING ON IT TOO HARD AND I ALWAYS GOT TO AND FROM WHERE I WAS GOING. IF YOU WANT TO TEAR UP THE TERRAIN, DO IT ON ROCKS AND DIRT IN AN APPROVED AREA, NOT IN THE TREES AND BUSH AND WATERWAYS.
MOST IMPORTANT IS, LEAVE IT LIKE YOU FOUND IT AND DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING THERE.

HERE IS A REAL WINNER !
IN CALGARY AND A NUMBER OF CANADIAN CITIES, IT IS ILLEGAL TO USE
COLLECTED RAIN WATER TO FLUSH TOILETS.
FOR SOME VERY STUPID REASON ONLY POTABLE ( DRINKABLE ) WATER IS ALLOWED.
I'VE HAD A FEW PETS THAT LIKED TO DRINK OUT OF THE TOILET
BUT I DON'T THINK THEY WOULD HAVE MINDED DRINKING RAIN WATER.
I DON'T KNOW OF ANY PEOPLE WHO DRINK OUT OF THE TOILET.
SO WHY ARE WE ADDING MORE CHLORINE AND OTHER CHEMICALS TO THE WATER
SYSTEM JUST FOR FLUSHING WASTE DOWN THE TOILET.
THIS IS ONE STRANGE BYLAW THAT NEEDS TO BE RE-THOUGHT.
WE HAVE ALL HEARD ABOUT ACID RAIN. WELL USING RAIN WATER MIGHT REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF CHEMICALS WE NOW USE TO KEEP THAT TOILET CLEAN.

"There's no physical law that says we can't be smart enough to use
the limited resources we do have on Earth in a sustainable way."
